Scott Boxsell

Bianca De Marco - Thursday, February 02, 2017

Scott Boxsell doesn’t like to complicate matters and pinpoints most of his business success to one simple ethic – in his words, it’s essentially about being a “good honest bloke’’.

The local transport operator has got the mix spot-on and over the past 21 years has gradually built one of the largest businesses in his hometown of Cootamundra.

Scott is now doing business with some of Australia’s leading companies and employs 36 people in various roles across the Scott Boxsell Transport operation.

Scott Boxsell is a local lad who grew up on the family farm at Bethungra and went to school in Cootamundra.

He left school and tried his hand at cabinet making and then did a trade in green keeping at Junee RSL Club.

His brother Grant had trucks and between jobs Scott would help out as a sub-contractor, as well as work his with dad, Keith, on the farm. He bought his first truck – a single axle rigid and trailer – as a 21-year-old. He then sold that truck and went to work for Post Transport in Wagga for four years before buying another truck and starting in general freight.

Later, he purchased a Kenworth K104 from Inland Truck Centres and with this truck the gradual expansion to eight Kenworth K200 prime movers began.

The business employs a qualified mechanic – his childhood mate Darren Shephard – and a third year apprentice mechanic to carry out in-house servicing and maintenance, and recently Scott bought a block of land on the outskirts of Cootamundra and is planning to build a new depot.

In his spare time, Scott enjoys the outdoor life with his wife and office manager, Kylie, and their young daughters Mischa, 10, and Emily, 8.

Scott also looks to son Adrian to help around the yard when he’s not working as an apprentice mechanic at the local Toyota dealership.

“It’s good to get away when I can, but generally I work seven days a week to keep things ticking along,” Scott said.

“I’ve always believed ‘Honesty, integrity and professionalism’ are crucial elements in business… It’s taken us to where we are today.

It’s not hard if we keep it simple. I think people appreciate that when it comes to getting the job done. We need to provide the best service possible everyday no matter how big or small the challenge may be.”

Scott knows when to don his business hat and has stepped up over the years when dealing with “big end of town” businesses which demand that the job is done right, first time every time.

One of Scott’s major contracts is carrying paper and general freight for a multinational company.

“They’re a well-respected and professional business,” Scott said.

“You have to be able to meet demands in every part of the business, from prompt administration to driver punctuality and equipment reliability.

Reliability and service is often the key and that’s essential in this type of business.”

Scott knows that when it comes to reliability in the transport industry it’s hard to look past Kenworth for everything in a truck. Almost half of his fleet – eight out of 17 prime movers – are Kenworth and that alone speaks volume for the product.

“I’m more than happy with the product,” Scott said.

“Inland Truck Centres in Wagga, work closely with us to spec our Kenworth K200 prime movers just the way we want them. Coupled with the Cummins ISX E5 the reliability and performance results are excellent, which in turn helps us achieve exceptional customer service.

We get exactly what we want in a truck – there’s no compromise because Kenworth Australia has the flexibility and options to give us exactly what we need for our applications.

We’re running B-doubles every day between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide – our K200 Kenworth fleet get the big jobs.”

“I enjoy the daily challenges of the transport and logistics industry and we enjoy what we do at Scott Boxsell Transport… It’s our passion”.
