Wagga Wagga Gains New $35m Transport Hub

The Federal Government has recently signed off on a major upgrade at the site of the Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales.

NSW Minister for Regional Development, Fiona Nash, said the hub will support a range of industries, including Riverina's cattle and grain farmers, enabling them to transport goods more easily and efficiently.

“In addition to the productivity gains, this project will help boost jobs in the region by creating 50 jobs during the construction of this project, as well as ongoing jobs on completion of the freight and logistics hub,” Minister Nash said.

According to Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, residents of the region would benefit from improved driving conditions as a result of moving the transport of goods and stock onto the rail network, and off the region's roads.

“Road safety and traffic congestion will improve, while deterioration of roads will slow,” he said. “It is estimated around 4,000 vehicles a day travel this section of road, with 20 per cent being heavy vehicles. This project will not only improve the region's global competitiveness it will help save lives.”

City of Wagga Wagga Acting General Manager, Janice Summerhayes, said the local Council will invest $12.3 million towards the remainder of the freight and logistics hub.

“The total Bomen Enabling Roads project is worth in the vicinity of $35 million and we expect it will become a transformative piece of infrastructure that will have a significant and long-lasting benefit for current and future businesses and the community,” she said.

The Bomen Enabling Road element of the Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub is a jointly funded project with the Australian Government contributing $14.5 million, the New South Wales Government contributing $8.3 million and the City of Wagga Wagga contributing $12.3 million.

Works are expected to be completed by mid-2017.
